In a inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious commencement to his tenure.

A Historic Figure

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
